چکیده

Procedure 1. Place the specimen on a clean glass slide. Add 1 drop of 20% KOH. 2. Place the cover glass on top of the slide and gently press to get rid of any air bubbles. Blot excess solution from the finished slide preparation with the gauze. 3. Place slide on the microscope stage and start with a low-power (10 ×) examination. To make epithelial cells visible, reduce illumination by lowering the condenser. 4. Examine for fungal structures such as hyphae or yeast. If any look suspicious, use the 40 × setting (high-dry objective) to investigate further, as hyphae or budding yeast suggest fungus.

A comparison of results from two mycology laboratories for the diagnosis of onychomycosis: a study of 85 cases in a geriatric population.

An investigative study was performed to compare the results from two mycology laboratories for the diagnosis of onychomycosis in a geriatric population and to determine the possible pharmacologic treatments based on the two laboratories' results. In this study, 85 cases of suspected onychomycosis involving men and women 65 years and older from a nursing home setting in South Florida were used. ...

Potassium Hydroxide Impregnated Alumina (KOH-Alumina) as a Recyclable Catalyst for the Solvent-Free Multicomponent Synthesis of Highly Functionalized Substituted Pyridazines and/or Substituted Pyridazin-3(2H)-ones under Microwave Irradiation

The work described herein employs potassium hydroxide impregnated alumina (KOH-alumina) as a mild, efficient, and recyclable catalyst for a one-pot solvent-free and environmentally safer synthesis of 3,4,6-triarylpyridazines and some substituted pyridazines from active methylene carbonyl species, 1,2-dicarbonyls, and hydrazine hydrate by microwave (MW) irradiation. The method offers highly conv...

Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) Wet Preparation for the Laboratory Diagnosis of Suppurative Corneal Ulcer

Background: Suppurative keratitis is a common ophthalmic condition mostly caused by fungi. Apart from fungal culture, wet preparation using 10% Potassium hydroxide (KOH) for microscopic detection of fungal elements is a rapid and accurate method of laboratory diagnosis. Purpose: This prospective and cross sectional study was undertaken in order to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity of wet prep...

Comparison of diagnostic methods in the diagnosis of dermatomycoses and onychomycoses.

Direct microscopic examination of potassium hydroxide (KOH)-prepared specimens is the simplest, cheapest method used for the diagnosis of mycotic infections of the skin. However, KOH preparations have been reported to have 5-15% of false-negative results, possibly because of the low visibility of scant, scattered fungal material of the nail scrapings and because the detection of fungal elements...

Diagnosis and management of cases of suspected dermatomycosis in The Netherlands: influence of general practice based potassium hydroxide testing.

BACKGROUND Microscopy of a potassium hydroxide preparation of skin scrapings or nail clippings, although widely advocated as a test for dermatomycosis, is used in only a small proportion of cases. AIM This study set out to investigate the effect of potassium hydroxide testing on the subjectively assessed probability that a dermatomycosis was present. METHOD The study was undertaken in 1992 ...
